Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays’ Week Ahead – March 2, 2026

Dr. Mays

Students are a priority every day we enter our buildings. Our students’ needs are why we exist as a school district. The goal is to ensure they can speak, read, write, and perform arithmetic at a high level when they leave. As educators, we get to provide our students with the tools they need to be successful citizens of our society, including the ability to think analytically. Every time a student has the opportunity to be challenged in an Alief ISD classroom, they are being better equipped to someday lead our society as a global citizen. The challenges are vast, and giving students opportunities to work together and talk through ideas and solutions to problems helps them strengthen the muscles they will need to be problem solvers as future adults.

We need our students to be strong, and our future depends on our ability to prepare them today! Let’s all lean into giving every student what they need to lead tomorrow. We want every student to be able to maximize their potential through the variety of rigorous learning and leadership opportunities offered here in the Alief Independent School District.

The Young Women’s Leadership School application is now open! This is a college-preparatory opportunity that will provide additional choices for our families. Please watch this video to learn more about:

The Power of the All-Girls School

As we increase the number of choice school opportunities, our families can find more information here about what is happening in Alief ISD.

I continue to be excited about this year! I am excited to “Be all in with Alief ISD!”

Happy Read Across America Day!

Today, campuses across Alief ISD are celebrating the joy of reading and the power of literacy. Thank you to our teachers, staff, and families who continue to foster a love of reading in every classroom and every home.

In this episode of ImpactED, Chief of Communications, Kristyn Cathey, sits down with Tamara Albury, Principal of The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS). They discuss the launch of this exciting new all-girls school and how it will empower students to thrive—preparing them for graduation, higher education, and success beyond the classroom. Learn more about the mission of TYWLS, its unique programs, and the opportunities it will provide for young women in Alief ISD.

Alief ISD Artists Shine at 2026 Houston Rodeo School Art Awards

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has honored the top 90 student artists in Texas, selected from more than 200,000 participants in this year’s School Art Program. This year, about 200,000 students representing 151 Texas school districts and private schools participated in the Rodeo’s School Art Program. Teachers submitted 4,300 pieces of artwork to NRG Center for preliminary judging. The judges selected 796 pieces to advance to the next round of judging, from which 90 students were chosen to participate in the School Art Auction and 10 were awarded as 3D Premium Winners. Among the standout winners are three talented Alief ISD high school students whose exceptional work rose to the top during multiple rounds of judging.

Yuneisy Pacheco, Elsik High School (Teacher: RJ Christensen)
Best of Show – Ceramic Sculpture
“Nature’s Balance” — Advanced to 3D Premium Award

Erika Perez, Taylor High School (Teacher: Jeffrey Jacobitz)
Best of Show – Painting
“The Cowboy and His Gentle Giant” — Advancing to Auction, Lot 40

Giselle Hernandez, Elsik High School (Teacher: RJ Christensen)
Best of Show – Ceramic Sculpture
“Bluebird Lantern” — Advancing to Auction, Lot 21

The Rodeo’s School Art Program promotes creativity while celebrating agriculture and Western heritage. Winning pieces will be displayed in the Hayloft Gallery inside NRG Center throughout the 2026 Rodeo. The final art auction will be held Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 11 a.m. in the NRG Arena Sales Pavilion.

More Than 550 Alief ISD Educators Earn Teacher Incentive Allotment Designations, Generating an Estimated $8M for Students and Teacher Retention

The Teacher Incentive Allotment is a Texas Education Agency initiative that allows districts to recognize and designate highly effective teachers as Recognized, Exemplary, or Master. Designations generate additional state funding annually as long as teachers remain eligible under the program’s requirements, with the majority of the funds being utilized to increase teacher salaries. Alief Independent School District has received official notification from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) that its 2025-2026 Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) designations have been approved, based on data from the 2024-2025 school year.
