Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays’ Week Ahead – January 20, 2026

Dr. Mays

Public education can be a powerful force in changing our students’ lives. This weekend, I was proud to watch our Miller Mavericks & our Mata Eagles celebrating and participating in the MLK Parade. While Martin Luther King was certainly an advocate for civil rights, he also understood the importance of education, sharing “Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life.” It would appear that MLK understood the focus of education uniquely, also sharing, “The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.” As educators, we get to shape the future in our daily interactions with students. Just as Martin Luther King impacted our present day with his sacrifice and hard work, educators also help shape the future with everything they do on a daily basis for students. So we uplift MLK for his advocacy for civil rights, we also celebrate his recognition of the importance of education!

The Young Women’s Leadership School application is now open! This is a college-preparatory opportunity that will provide additional choices for our families. Please watch this video to learn more about:

Why All Girls?

I continue to be excited about this year! I am excited to “Be all in with Alief ISD!”

Salvaged Barn Construction

Alief ISD proudly purchased a salvaged barn from Ohio, originally built in 1813, and is reconstructing it at the Alief ISD Agriculture Science Center. This historic structure is being transformed into a hands-on learning space, designed to foster student growth and community enrichment. Our CTE Construction students gained valuable cross-curricular experience through active involvement in construction, plumbing, and more. As we look ahead to future additions, including a livestock show barn and a new Veterinary Science facility, this project will continue to serve as a meaningful learning environment for generations to come.

Olle Robotics — S.W.A.T. Squared — hit the Regional Championship

Olle Middle School’s Robotics Team, S.W.A.T. Squared, delivered an impressive performance at the Regional Championship this Saturday, proudly representing Alief ISD with excellence and innovation. The team placed 9th overall—just one position shy of advancing to the playoffs—and earned the prestigious Innovate Award, a league-wide honor awarded to only one team.

Judges recognized the students for their creativity, problem-solving skills, and perseverance, noting: “This team faced various challenges which demonstrated several creative thinking skills. Although a rookie team, they were quick to troubleshoot challenges to continue in competition.” For a first-year team, this achievement reflects the strong foundation of innovation and learning at Olle.

The event also showcased the strength of the Alief community, with one of the largest and most energetic crowds in attendance cheering on the team. While the season has come to an end, the momentum, learning, and excitement continue. Thank you to everyone who supports our students and this growing program—this is just the beginning.
