CCC’s Spring 2012 Newsletter

With the advent of the Year of the Dragon, CCC has been busy hosting our annual Lunar New Year Festival, helping local Houstonians understand the new year’s celebrations in partnership with Fox 26’s Natalie Bomke, and stepping out into the community! 2012 looks to be an eventful year for us and we hope that yours has gotten off to a good start too!

Lunar New Year Festival a Massive Success!

On a beautiful sunny Saturday in January, 15,000 people descended on CCC to celebrate the fortuitous Year of the Dragon! Guests enjoyed traditional foods, bazaar shopping, stunning cultural performances and displays and special features, such as the Fu-Dai, Bags of Luck. To join us in celebrating, many dignitaries attended the opening ceremony including State Rep. Scott Hochberg, State Rep. Hubert Vo, Harris County Sherriff Adrian Garcia, and City Council Member’s Wanda Adama, Al Hoang, Mike Laster and more! Guest favorites include the traditional dragon and lion dances and the ever popular Mariachi Band! A special thank you to our major donors HEB, State Farm, Exxon Mobil, and Fiesta Mart!

Mad Potter Field Trip And Bright Beginnings

Pottery has never been so much fun! Childcare students recently attended a Mad Potter session where they had the opportunity to showcase their creativity by painting ceramic coffee mugs, pet bowls and plates. Mad Pottery sessions are designed for children and adults to have fun through art. CCC is proud to encourage our students to develop their knowledge through new experiences. We hope to foster an appreciation of learning and to help ensure a solid educational foundation.
By the way, on January 25th, 11 childcare students and their teachers joined ED Chi-Mei Lin and Childcare Director Toni Livingston at the United Way’s Bright Beginnings anniversary celebration. The event had many interactive stations, including flubber and face painting for the children to enjoy.

Green Eggs and Camp

It may only be March, but summer is fast approaching! Our theme this summer is centered on the great Dr. Seuss and each week will focus on a different book and its life lessons.  The summer camp will have three days of class where the students will stay refreshed on their TEKS in English, Social Studies, Science, PE, Math, and Art.  There are weekly fieldtrips to Houston’s best places and on-site for sports and water activities on Fridays.  Visit the website to learn more!

Recycling Kickoff!

In an effort to lower our impact on the environment, CCC is going green! Starting in March, we will be recycling all paper, cardboard, metal, and plastics to offset our waste. The program is going to be supported by our After-School Program and Summer Campers to foster civic responsibility and develop environmentally-responsible adults! Part of CCC’s Going Green Initiative, Phase One included installing a community garden and now the recycling program completes Phase Two. A Third Phase is being explored currently to see the feasibility of composting as well.

Law Day

On February 18th, CCC held many interesting activities to celebrate Law Week. This year’s theme was “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom”. Students were invited by the Asian American Bar Association and the Houston Bar Association to learn about their rights and liberties, as well as our court system. They had a blast drawing poster boards provided by the CCC and had the opportunity to participate in a city wide poster contest. It was such an enjoyable day to celebrate the rule of Law and the enduring values of equality and justice.
