The International District is pleased to announce their 2019 student scholarship awardees. Each year the District funds five (5) $2,000 scholarships. Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Ehiziemien (Deborah) Nehikhare – Hastings High School
Deborah will attend the University of North Texas for the fall 2019 semester. Upon completion of her bachelor degree, she plans to attend Johns Hopkins Medical school in an effort to become an OB/GYN. She is an active member of the Spanish and National Honor Society while also holding officer positions in the African Student Organization and the Black Student Union. While working at a local daycare facility, she also taught students during her time there and helped them improve their reading level and vocabulary.

Mohamed (Mabizari) – Elsik High School
Mabizari will attend Harvard University and study political science and then enter law school. He was also accepted at Cornell University, as well as Texas A&M University and the University of Texas. His sister, Amina, was accepted into every Ivy League college except Harvard in 2017. She currently attends Yale. Mohammed played varsity basketball at Elsik and served as president of the student council and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is active in the community working on projects for Habitat for Humanity, Pennies for Patients, and the Alief Garden, in addition to coaching basketball at the YMCA. He also works as a waiter at 68 Crawfish.

Tyler Nguyen – Alief Early College High School
Tyler will attend Texas Southern University. He is a member of the Asian Appreciation, Earth, Gamer Clubs. He is a member of the award-winning Alpha Active Knight group at Alief Early College High School. He loved attending school at AECHS and earned perfect attendance every year.
He has served as a teacher’s assistant at the St. Justin Martyr Vietnamese School and is for their Lunar New Year celebration and is captain of the Lion Dance team.

Baohan Phi – Alief Taylor High School
Baohan will attend the University of Houston for the fall 2019 semester. Her goal is to earn her teaching degree and return to Alief ISD to teach math.
She was also accepted into the University of Texas at San Antonio, Houston Baptist University, and Sam Houston State University. She has been an active member of the Texas Association of Future Educators association and has served as president and treasurer. She also held an officers position in Mu Alpha Theta Math Club and was member of the Student Council and National Honor Society.

Binh Thai Nguyen – Kerr High School
Binh will attend the University of Texas at Dallas and major in biology. Her ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician for needy children in developing countries. She has been an active member and mentor in speech and debate throughout his years at Kerr. She has also served as an event organizer with the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association and is very active with the Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees (PAIR) as a teacher and mentor since August 2016.
