If you’ve been craving fried wings with big flavor, this weekend is your moment.
Black Restaurant Week wraps up on Sunday, April 19, and Flava Wings — with a location in the International District — is offering several specials for the occasion.
But, really, every day is special at Flava Wings, where diners say things like:
“Finally some wings you can sink your teeth into and leave the bones clean!”
“Fried perfectly. Sauced perfectly. The staff was nice. The flavors were delicious.”
“The food that I’ve experienced here is Bussin! Bussin!”
And, simply: “10/10”
Owner Krishna Buford built the Flava Wings concept on one key promise: everything is made in-house and to order.
“That’s what makes us different. We prepare all of our orders fresh,” Buford told KPRC during a Black Restaurant Week promo back in 2023. “When the ticket comes, the food is dropped.”
Sometimes, that means you might have to wait, especially during busy times, but — trust us — it’s worth it. You can also order ahead of time online.
Flava Wings opened at the peak of COVID, during one of the toughest times the restaurant industry has ever seen. They pushed forward, serving hot, fresh food to go and built a loyal following one order at a time.
Buford credits Black Restaurant Week as a key part of their growth from a concept to two locations — and now, franchise opportunities for those who want to bring Flava Wings to even more communities.
“There are so many options out there, but I have to believe, because Black Restaurant Week embraced us so early on, that had a lot to do with our success,” she said.
The only real challenge at Flava Wings? Choosing your “flava.” But, don’t fret, we found out there isn’t a wrong answer. Each flavor, or ‘flava,’ we tried was unique and delicious.
Flava Wings offers 13 bold flavors — 10 wet and 3 dry rubs — that range from sweet and tangy to fiery and adventurous.
Warning: The list you are about to read will make your mouth water.
Wet Flavas:
- Ooooweee Sweet & Sticky (most popular)
- Bangin’ Bourbon Black Pepper
- New School Buffalo Sauce
- Yum Yum Garlic Parmesan
- Over The Top Flava Hot
- Kickin’ Spicy Korean
- Uncle’s Hickory BBQ
- Grandma’s Garden
- Yea Mon! Jerk
- Hottie Lemon Pepper
Dry Rubs:
- Zesty Lemon Pepper
- Goodness Garlic Parmesan
- My Boy Cajun Spice
Flava Wings specializes in chicken wings, of course, but also offers turkey and duck wings as a twist on the classic wing experience. (The duck wings we tried were divine.)
Don’t miss the delectable sides, including fan favorites like Cajun corn, fried and seasoned to perfection. We also loved the mac and cheese. Oh, and don’t forget to wash it all down with a big Kool-Aid.
We have one key piece of advice from our recent experience: Keep a lot of napkins handy.
Also, come hungry and be ready to answer that key question: What’s your flava?
