Dear Key Communicators,

For those of you that have been involved in Alief ISD for a few years or more, you know that I have written and spoken on many different topics. In those communications, I have always attempted to be open, honest, and transparent, regardless of the topic. This message is no different. While I am fully aware that each of you has not read nor watched all of my communications, I do hope that you take a moment to read this note.

During the April 19th Board Meeting, I shared with the Board in Closed Session that I have decided to retire from Alief ISD and education effective December 31, 2022. I will be 59 years old and will have dedicated 37 years to the greatest and most meaningful profession known to man. I continue to say that because it is true. Every educator that has spent time in the classroom, or working with students in any environment, should add up the number of students they have had a direct impact on in their career. Then, multiply that by at least ten because the impact carries on through each person impacted times ten. It could be friends, children, co-workers or any number of people. It really is mind-boggling to think about the impact you have on each student that crosses your path as an educator.

At the start of my career in education, in Aldine ISD, I spent six years teaching multiple history courses and coaching middle and high school student/athletes. In Cypress Fairbanks ISD, I spent 14 years in various campus and administrative leadership roles. In the Stafford Municipal School District, I was tested and challenged personally and professionally as I spent five years in my first superintendency. In Alief ISD, at my retirement date, I will have spent the last 12 years as superintendent of a great school district. I mention this because I am often asked to share my career pathway and how that pathway led me to where I am now. I tell them that in 1986, I had no “grand plan” nor a “grand idea” of what I wanted to do in my career. But like many people, I worked hard and tried to prepare myself for any opportunities that might be presented in the future.

I know everyone will be asking what is next and who will be our next superintendent? These details are being discussed by the Board. I assure you that the Alief ISD Board of Trustees has a meaningful plan they will execute in the coming weeks and months. I can’t say enough great things about our school board. Each member is committed to Alief ISD students and staff. The Alief ISD family is fortunate and blessed to have Ms. Ann Williams-Board President; Dr. Darlene Breaux-Board-Vice President; Dr. Lily Truong-Board Secretary; Ms. Jennifer Key-Board Assistant Secretary; Mr. Rick Moreno-Trustee; and Pastor Gregg Patrick- Trustee leading in this transition.

I have had the honor of working with and partnering with the Board, staff and community on issues that will provide a solid foundation for the next generation of educators and students in Alief. We will have opportunities to reflect and share on some of those successes and challenges over the coming months.

God Bless each of you and I hope to see you around!
