DR. MAYS’ WEEK AHEAD

An Update from Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays

Español | Tiếng Việt

I began last week visiting campuses, walking classrooms, and engaging our students as they worked. I was so impressed with our students and their ability to share what they have learned during the first few weeks of school. Each campus and department is focused on climate and culture this year, but our campuses are also focused on delivering quality instruction in order to increase and improve student achievement across the board.

The district’s motto, “Preparing Students for Tomorrow — Caring for Them Today,” guides us through every facet of our day-to-day journey of student and staff excellence. We want every student to maximize their potential. Caring for our students means challenging them every step of the way to be their best selves. From our early learning centers to our graduating seniors, our goal as educators here is to grow every student by challenging them each minute they are in our care. We want to meet their individual needs so that our students are prepared for all the challenges that await them as they enter the workforce or head to college. Caring for our students today by providing quality instruction is the gift that keeps giving today, tomorrow and in the future.

I look forward to continuing my campus tours and highlighting what makes Alief great: our students and staff.

Recognizing our students, professional and support staff is so important to not only their success, but ours as well. We want to highlight those students and staff that help to create the positive climate and culture that Alief ISD is known for. Each month, the district will honor one secondary student, two professional and two staff members as our monthly MVP. We encourage all of our stakeholders to submit aMVP Award Submission by September 1st. The winners will be announced the second week of September.

Celebrations

For five years in a row, Alief ISD has been a TAEA District of Distinction for Visual Arts award winner. Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) awards school districts that advocate for art in schools, their community, and beyond. Congratulations and thanks to all art teachers for all you do to showcase our talented students.

Moyinoluwa Ajayi, a senior at Taylor High School, had the honor of being selected through a highly competitive application process to participate in the prestigious Young Leaders Summit (YLS) in Los Angeles, California, this summer. The YLS serves as a college empowerment program for a diverse group of high-achieving, economically disadvantaged high school juniors.

Over the summer Yesenia Saloj from Elsik High School was honored as a Western Art Academy Scholar by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The award provided Saloj with a competitive scholarship to attend college summer art courses at Schreiner University.

Congratulations to the students from Hastings High School and Alief Early College High School for their well-deserved recognition by the College Board National Recognition Program! You have truly made Alief proud with your achievement!
