DR. MAYS’ WEEK AHEAD
An Update from Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays

Español | Tiếng Việt

This past week, I visited Best Elementary School, where Principal Renee Canales has developed a strong culture and campus community and provided an environment where our students are nurtured and engaged. I also visited Albright Middle School, where Principal Lori Wyatt and the team have phenomenal instructional systems to support student achievement. The assistant principals at Albright are super competitive about classroom instruction in their respective departments. I am eager to know which department will claim the Teacher of the Year honors.

As a part of my promise to listen and learn, I will host upcoming community opportunities to visit, with Coffee with the Superintendent in the morning and Soda with the Superintendent in the evenings for those who may not be able to attend a morning session. I look forward to visiting and learning how we can continue to improve in serving our students and community.

Thank you to all who came out to the meet and greet. I am grateful that we have such a proud community. I enjoyed the opportunity to hear from our teachers and veteran staff who are so connected to the history here in Alief ISD. Our student displays of talent made the evening special and one that I will never forget. Even our student interns were on duty with our communications team. Please take a moment to enjoy the photos that our student interns were able to capture.

CELEBRATIONS
Elsik senior Yassin Omar Mabizari will be honored on Fox 26 Making the Grade. Yassin plays on the boys’ varsity basketball team and carries a 4.75 GPA. He is a member of the Muslim Student Association, National Honor Society, Student Council, and Student Principal Advisory Council, and he is a volunteer coach at the YMCA. Mabizari will be honored with a pep rally that will be covered by Fox 26 on January 17.

Each year, TMEA, which stands for the Texas Music Educators Association, holds its rigorous audition process across 33 TMEA Regions to select students to 1 of the 18 All-State Music Ensembles. More than 70,000 students audition and only 1,875 students are selected to perform at the annual conference in February. This conference is attended by more than 30,000 people from Texas and around the world. This year, Alief ISD has 4 band students who earned placement in the state’s top musical ensembles. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. Only the top 2.6% of musicians who initially audition become All-State musicians.

Three Kerr High School students were named All-State musicians for the first time in Kerr’s music program history. Senior Mark Wright earned 1st chair for Tenor Saxophone in the All-State Jazz Band. Senior Daniel Cobos earned 1st chair for Alto Saxophone in the All-State Jazz Band. Junior Zoe Hall earned 1st chair for Oboe in the All-State Honor Band.

Sophomore Daniel Rivas-Velasco from Elsik High School was also named an All-State musician, earning 8th chair for Trumpet in the All-State Band.

I know you will join me in celebrating these amazing student achievements!

Sincerely,

Dr. Anthony Mays
Superintendent
Alief ISD
