ALIEF ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES DR. ANTHONY MAYS TO SERVE AS ALIEF ISD’S NEW LEADER

During its Tuesday, December 13, 2022, board meeting, the Alief ISD Board of Trustees approved by unanimous vote, Dr. Anthony Mays, Interim Superintendent of Austin ISD, as the new superintendent of schools for the District. His official start date will be in January 2023.

Dr. Mays has more than 20 years of experience as an education professional. He has served as a classroom teacher, principal, and administrator. He is currently the Interim Superintendent for Austin ISD, and before that, he served Austin ISD as its Chief of Schools. Prior to joining Austin ISD, he was the Senior Director of Schools for the Harris County Department of Education. He has worked in Dallas ISD and Fort Worth ISD, beginning his career at Pflugerville ISD as a special education teacher.

While serving as Chief of Schools in Austin ISD, Dr. Mays’ leadership resulted in raising the accountability rating, increasing industry-based certifications and associate degree attainments, supervising and supporting an Enrollment and Advocacy department to increase enrollment and retain students, and most recently as Interim Superintendent, successfully passing a $2.44 billion bond.

“Dr. Anthony Mays is a motivational leader with a proven track record in working in partnership with principals, teachers, parents, and the community to improve student outcomes,” Alief ISD Board President Darlene Breaux said. “The board unanimously agrees that he is the perfect person to lead this district into the future focusing on high quality and equitable educational experiences for all Alief ISD students.”

“I am very excited and honored to serve as the next superintendent of Alief ISD,” said Mays. “I look forward to collaborating with students, staff and the entire Alief community to meet student needs.”

Applications for the Alief ISD superintendent position, consistent with state law, required that “candidates must have or be qualified to obtain the Texas Superintendency Certificate. To receive the standard Superintendent Certificate, candidates must hold, at a minimum, a principal certificate or the equivalent issued under this title or by another state or country.”

Dr. Mays is currently enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin’s Cooperative Superintendency Program to complete eligibility requirements to take the TExES Superintendent 195 certification exam. He has completed course expectations for the first of the two-semester program. It is projected that he will finish certification requirements at the end of the spring semester (May 2023) and qualify to take the exam in June of 2023.

Dr. Mays has a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Huston-Tillotson University and a Master of Education from Texas State University. He received his doctorate in education from Tarleton State University. Dr. Mays is an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Downtown and University of Houston-Lone Star College Kingwood.

Active in his community, he serves as vice chairman of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators Central Office Commission, is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha, 100 Black Men and Texas Association of School Administrators.
