Dear District F,

I cannot believe it is November already — where did the year go? Before we slow down for the holidays, I want to share several crucial votes from the council and follow up on previous topics related to the District.

In April council voted to install 318 license plate reader cameras – citywide to support public safety priorities. In District F, I purchased 50 at the request of residents and various neighborhoods, asking for additional support. We are ahead of schedule, and I will notify you when installation is complete, and the cameras are active.

Similarly, District F was featured in the Houston Chronicle regarding our efforts to keep our neighborhoods clean with our district-funded Hot Spot team. I am in conversation with the director of solid waste to identify popular illegal dumping locations. Meadows Village HOA has already requested a camera specifically for dumping — if your neighborhood is interested, let me know – I can’t make any promises. Still, the more information I have, the better I can make funding decisions.

Let’s talk construction, there are significant transportation projects scheduled throughout the District, and I am happy to announce all of the planned projects from FY 22 are complete, and many were ahead of schedule. More details and images are below in the body of the newsletter for your viewing and information.

Alief: The New Alief Neighborhood Center will open Saturday, December 10th. Please save the date. I will share an official flyer once completed. Stay tuned.

Imperial Point: Last time we met in September, I promised to return with solutions regarding your sidewalks and streets. I have approved $166,000 on Baneway for new sidewalks and ADA ramps, $100,000 for sidewalks and ADA ramps on Imperial Point Rd, and a panel replacement on Langdon Rd. for $44,000. Stay tuned for an official construction notice.

Westchase: Saturday, November 14th, from 12 pm-4 pm, Breaking Bread will host their 2nd Annual event at Woodchase Park. This is a perfect opportunity to experience our new park and support a community-led organization that serves its neighbors.

Briarmeadow: ADA ramps are being added to the walking trail, and I received a complaint in October regarding the sub-contractor parking on the Esplanade. Please see the section in the newsletter that includes before and after photos that address the complaints. Also, congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Colton for the newest addition to their family. Welcome to District F, baby girl!

Carver Crest: I have approved $191,675.00 for an overlay on Jarvis to Clarkcrest before the speed cushions. With that, please complete the speed cushion public notice form mailed to each resident due December 5th. The speed cushions are an additional $20,500. Lastly, congratulations to all of the candidates on Tuesday. Public service is not easy, but it was worth it. District F has a new Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner-elect, Leslie Briones, and a new State Representative-elect 133, Mano DeAyala.

I want to thank Harris County Commissioner Jack Cagle for his partnership, albeit short. He assisted and funded projects that benefitted various neighborhoods in District F, such as street restriping at multiple intersections, investment of $2M worth of trees, and disaster preparedness efforts.

SOLID WASTE OPERATIONS UPDATE

Effective Sunday, November 6, 2022

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) will be adjusting the hours of operation at the six (6) Neighborhood Depositories & Recycling Centers will be adjusting their hours of operation as daylight saving time ends. For the safety of our customers and staff, now that daylight savings time is ending, the locations listed below will be open Tuesday through Sunday, except city-approved holidays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All locations are closed on Mondays. Citizens are encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes before closing to allow adequate time to unload.

WORK AUTHORIZATION: LEAWOOD

This work authorization has been issued to place traffic calming devices at Leawood. Construction is scheduled to commence on November 18, 2022 and is anticipated to end by December 30, 2022. The work authorization will take 42 days to be completed. The project contractor is DG Medina Construction, LLC.

COUNCILMEMBER THOMAS PARTICIPATES IN THE HOUSTON ATROS PARADE

On November 7th, Councilmember Thomas joined Mayor Turner and her council colleagues in celebration of the 2022 World Series winners. The Astros defeated the Phillies in six games to earn their second championship in franchise history. It was the first time since 2013 that the champion won on its home field.

COUNCILMEMBER VISITS REES ELEMENTARY

On November 10th, Councilmember Thomas visited and Rees Elementary to read a story to students. The students are participating in the Read to the Final Four challenge and are competing against other campuses. Councilmember was able to help them earn their reading minutes while encouraging them to continue growing as learners.

MAYOR TURNER HOSTS THE 2022 STATE OF THE CITY

On November 2nd, Mayor Turner addressed local officials and business leaders, sharing Houston’s preparations for a stronger and brighter future. This signature event, hosted and produced by Houston First Corporation, was an opportunity for community and business leaders to reflect upon the year’s challenges and celebrate the city’s successes as they hear directly from Houston’s CEO. Mayor Turner highlighted many topics and spent time discussing complete communities and the Alief Neighborhood Center. District F had great representation from the International Management District, SN 25, and Complete Community University graduates.

LUNCHEON WELCOMING WYNTON MARSALIS TO HOUSTON

On November 1st, Councilmember Thomas joined Dr. Lawson, the Executive Director of the Houston Public Library, and the Houston Public Library Foundation in welcoming jazz legend, Wyton Marsalis, to the city. He later performed at Kinder High School of the Performing and Visual Arts.

IBN SINA COMMUNITY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CENTER

Councilmember and staff attended visited the Wilcrest location of the Ibn Sina Foundation on November 1st. The visit highlighted the critical nature and importance of the this community model. In 2001, the vision included primary and dental care and has expanded to mental health and a children’s clinic. With over 9 languages spoken Ibn Sina is reaching our immigrant, refugee, limited income neighbors and addressing their healthcare needs in the middle of their neighborhood in 77099.

COUNCILMEMBER THOMAS DELIVERS AT THE STATE OF HOUSING SYMPOSIM

On October 27th, Councilmember Thomas joined Director Keith Bynam and others for an informative panel discussion on affordable housing, credit worthiness, inventory concerns, and the value of collaboration. Hosted by the Houston Association of Realtors, this sold-out event was a huge success.

COUNCILMEMBER THOMAS AND STAFF HOST A DAY OF COMMUNITY MEETINGS

On October 25th, Councilmember Thomas attended several meetings focused on community concerns, improvements, celebrations. Her stops included the following:

Presentation to Consul Jerril G. Santos who accepted a proclamation for Filipino American Heritage Month.
Press conference with AAA Texas, Christian Brothers, and the Harris County Sherrif’s Department about catalytic converter thefts and free etching programs.
METRO briefing about the University Corridor Project and its expansion to Westchase Park and Ride.
Community meeting with residents of Contemporary Gardens on Westheimer at Molina’s about litter, food trucks, and traffic.

CM THOMAS SUPPORTS UPCOMING TRANSPORTATION AND DRAINIAGE OPERATION PROJECTS
