Council Member Thomas Praises City of Houston Rental Assistance Program

Upon the passing of an ordinance that offers $15 million in financial assistance to apartment owners and renters for the months of April and May, Council Member Thomas, Chair of the Housing and Community Affairs Committee, has released the following statement:

“Thank you to Mayor Tuner, the Housing and Community Development Department, and Baker Ripley for this much needed program,” said Council Member Thomas. “It will provide $1,056 per month to qualified low to moderate income individuals who are delinquent on their April and May rent, thereby preventing many in our communities from being evicted. With the vast number of apartments and single-family home renters that populate District F, this is the kind of relief that so many of our constituents have been requesting.”

“Beginning May 7th at 10am, an online portal will be available for apartment owners to apply for financial assistance from Baker Ripley that would cover rent for tenants who are behind on April and May payments. All tenants with a lease will be able to apply through the portal beginning May 13th. I urge all landlords and tenants who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis to participate in this program. Over 6,800 households will benefit.”

“There are tremendous needs currently on both sides of this situation. And we are aware that there are tremendous needs ahead. This program is the first step in laying the foundation to provide additional assistance in the near future.”
