Recent winner of the James Beard award for “Best Chef Southwest” award, Chris Shepherd has joined the market as a vendor, selling delectable Underbelly goods like pies, baked goods, pickles (aka “Bloody Mary Fixins”) and their seasonally driven items. Chris has been a long time supporter of our farmers and a weekly customer at our Saturday market. Pastry chef, Victoria Dearmond, is at the market most weekends manning the booth. Be sure to try their lard biscuits and vinegar pie.

Event: Children’s Gardening Series
Our FREE Children’s Garden Series returns this Sunday. This month our popular series will cover water! Kids will learn all about this precious resource, its importance throughout the world, and why we must conserve it in order to preserve it.
Classes are 30 minutes and start at 11:30 and 12:30, respectively. As always, the classes are free and open to the public. The classes are held in the shade of a big oak tree and water is provided.

Growing Youth Gardeners!
 Did you know that an indicator of a healthy community is correlated to the number of after-school programs in that community’s zip code? Three after-school programs per zip code correlates to an increase in student achievement, better health outcomes, and less crime! The Co-operative for After-School Enrichment (CASE) is cultivating after-school culture through the After-School Initiative (ASI) Residency Grant. Urban Harvest Youth Education is proud to announce we have been selected once again for the 2014-2015 school year! This grant will support and develop our Growing Gardeners Project at four partner school sites. Students will grow vegetables, fruit, and flowers year-round as they learn about growing healthy food for them and the planet. Thank you CASE and HCDE!

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH GARDENS
Houston Urban Gardeners Meeting + Seed Swap
 Join HUG on August 11th for an early fall Seed Swap. Bring small bags or envelopes for your seeds, a pen or pencil, and your cool weather seeds, seedlings, and bulbs. Vegetable and native plant seeds are preferred. The swap will start at 5:45 PM and go until the regular HUG meeting at 6:30 PM. Afterwards, Gary Edmondson, former Director of Education at Urban Harvest, will talk about mid-summer gardening and planning the fall garden.
