Trustees Appoint Janet Spurlock to Vacant Position 5 Seat

The Alief ISD Board of Trustees appointed former educator Janet Spurlock to the Position 5 seat on the Board during a Special Called Meeting on May 10, 2022. Trustees conducted interviews after calling for applications for the seat which became vacant following Harvey Tong’s resignation in January 2022.

Spurlock, who retired as principal of Mata Intermediate School in 2016, spent a total of 27 years in Alief ISD. She will hold the seat until the next Trustee election set for November 2023. She may choose to run for election at that time in order to keep her seat.

Spurlock, who earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi and her master’s degree from Prairie View A&M University, served on the 2015 and 2021 Bond Steering Committees as well as an HOA Board Member in Pheasant Trace Village and is active in Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.

“We had several quality applicants to choose from so we did our due diligence to interview each one and get to know all of their strengths. Janet Spurlock’s credentials are clearly outstanding. Her 27 years of service to the Alief community are impressive and we were equally impressed with her continued involvement in Alief ISD and the Alief community. She is a valuable addition to this Board of Trustees and I look forward to her ideas and vision as we move forward,” said Board President Ann Williams.

Spurlock will be sworn into office during the May 17, 2022 Board Meeting.
