Important Message from Alief ISD

Dear Alief Team,

The new school year for all of us (except those employees at Bush Elementary which started on July 12) will be here before we know it. As we launch this new school year I need to share information with you that, honestly, I did not think I would be talking about just six to eight weeks ago.

Let me assure you that the Alief ISD Leadership Team and School Board are doing everything we can do to ensure the safety of our students, staff and community. As you may have seen in the news, due to the Governor’s order, school districts do not have the ability to mandate that all students and staff members wear masks like we did just a year ago.

Alief ISD, as well as most other school districts in the state, does not have the ability to open a fully funded virtual school like we did last school year.

With all of that being said, I would like all of us to do our very best to protect our students and our co-workers by voluntarily wearing masks. As you may know, students under the age of 12 cannot receive the COVID vaccine yet. That may be the case in the near future as trials are currently underway, but for right now they cannot.

Since we will have in-person learning for all students this year and many of our students (those under 12) are left defenseless against COVID, especially this Delta Variant that is spreading, I am strongly urging all employees to wear masks in an effort to protect these children and those adults with underlying health issues that leave them more susceptible to COVID.

I am also asking all parents to please send their children to school with a mask. According to the medical experts I talk with almost daily, other than the vaccine, the wearing of masks is the most effective way to reduce the spread.

All of us in education have an unwritten contract with our students. That unwritten contract is that we will do our best to protect our children and do no harm to them. To help prevent our children and co-workers from being exposed to this variant, I strongly urge you to join me in honoring that contract and simply wear masks when you are in our facilities, especially when you are around students.

Estimado equipo de Alief,

El nuevo año escolar para todos nosotros (excepto los empleados de la escuela primaria Bush que comenzó el 12 de julio) estará aquí antes de que nos demos cuenta. Al iniciar este nuevo año escolar necesito compartir con ustedes información que, honestamente, no pensé que estaría hablando hace apenas seis u ocho semanas.

Permítanme asegurarles que el equipo de liderazgo de Alief ISD y la Junta Directiva están haciendo todo lo posible para garantizar la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes, el personal y la comunidad. Como pueden haber visto en las noticias, debido a la orden del Gobernador, los distritos escolares no tienen la capacidad de ordenar que todos los estudiantes y miembros del personal usen mascarillas como lo hicimos hace un año.

Alief ISD, así como la mayoría de los otros distritos escolares en el estado, no tiene la capacidad de abrir una escuela virtual totalmente financiada como lo hicimos el año escolar pasado.

Con todo esto dicho, me gustaría que todos nosotros hiciéramos lo mejor para proteger a nuestros estudiantes y compañeros de trabajo usando voluntariamente las mascarillas. Como ya lo sabrán, los estudiantes menores de 12 años aún no pueden recibir la vacuna para el COVID. Es posible que así sea en un futuro próximo, ya que se están realizando pruebas actualmente, pero por el momento no es posible.

Debido a que este año tendremos aprendizaje presencial para todos los estudiantes y a que muchos de nuestros estudiantes (menores de 12 años) quedan indefensos ante el COVID, especialmente la variante Delta que se está propagando, estoy exhortando a todos los empleados a que usen mascarillas en un esfuerzo por proteger a estos niños y a aquellos adultos con condiciones de salud preexistentes y que los hacen más susceptibles al COVID.

También les pido a todos los padres que envíen a sus hijos a la escuela con una mascarilla. Según los expertos médicos con los que hablo casi a diario, aparte de la vacuna, el uso de mascarillas es la forma más eficaz de reducir el contagio.

Todos los profesionales de la educación tenemos un contrato que no está por escrito con nuestros estudiantes. Ese contrato no escrito señala que haremos todo lo posible para proteger a nuestros estudiantes y no les causaremos daño alguno. Para ayudar a evitar que nuestros estudiantes y compañeros de trabajo estén expuestos a esta variante, les pido insistentemente que se unan conmigo en el cumplimiento de ese contrato y utilicen sus mascarillas cuando estén en nuestras instalaciones, especialmente cuando estén cerca de nuestros estudiantes.

Gracias por preocuparse por sus estudiantes y sus compañeros de trabajo. Disfruten de su fin de semana y vuelvan el lunes listos para usar sus mascarillas y abrir el nuevo año escolar el martes.
