• O’Donnell Middle School orchestra teacher Dr. Richard Spitz is performing in the orchestra for the current Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) production of Dream Girls. He also performed with TUTS at the Tommy Tune Awards Ceremony.
  • Many Alief ISD high school athletes made 1st Team All District. In boys basketball, Elsik’s Tristan Dick and Taylor’s Kiante Kizzie, Simon Falokun and Kavin Ezekwe made the team. In boys soccer, Hastings’s Bryan Alfaro and Mauricio Garcia made the team.
  • Kerr High School’s Speech & Debate Team won second place sweepstakes at UIL Regionals, one of the most competitive in the state, with the efforts of Bao Nguyen in Persuasive Speaking and Huy Bui and Nena Burgess in Poetry. Bui placed first in Poetry, while Nena Burgess placed third. Both will be representing Kerr at the state level competitions in May.
  • Alief ISD was spotlighted by the Texas Education Agency through the High-Quality Pre-Kindergarten Grant Study. Approximately 600 public school districts and charter schools received this grant, but Alief ISD was the only Houston area public school district to be chosen for the high quality case study.
  • Outley Elementary School raised $9,648.44 toward helping the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to meet its goal of eliminating blood cancers forever.
  • Hastings High School student Kimberly Hoang won first place in the Abstract Category in the 35th Annual High School Shoot-Out Contest sponsored by the Third Floor Photographic Society of Texas A&M University-Commerce.  This contest is affiliated with the Association of Texas Photographers and Instructors.  Hoang is eligible for a $500 scholarship for Texas A&M University-Commerce.
  • Taylor High School student Austin Lam will be recognized at the South Texas Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Awards Banquet. His project, Shape Matter, was selected as the recipient of the ASME Design and Materials Award. Lam will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
  • Alief Early College High School student Shahad Alfartosy received the Beat the Odds Scholarship. Only five high school seniors were selected for this award out of about 100 applicants. The scholarship is awarded by the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas.
  • Elsik High School student Ma Nan Soe was awarded $7,000 from the Boys and Girls Club/Salvation Army Bright Futures Scholarship. Soe is a junior and received the scholarship based on her outstanding essays.
