State Representatives Hubert Vo and Gene Wu, City Council Member Richard Nguyen, and partnering organizations to host a community health event and Affordable Care Act information session on Saturday
[HOUSTON, TX]—Local elected officials and organizations in southwest Houston will host a community health event “Have a Healthy New Year” on Saturday, January 10th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Chinese Community Center, 9800 Town Park Dr., Houston, TX 77036.
“Have a Healthy New Year” is open to the public and will feature free health screenings, vaccinations and flu shots, as well as information sessions on the Affordable Care Act, CHIP, Medicaid and Gold Card. Counseling and assistance will be offered in English, Chinese and Vietnamese.
The event program will begin with greetings from hosts: State Representatives Hubert Vo (District 149) and Gene Wu (District 137), and City Council Member Richard Nguyen (District F). The community partners providing services and assistance include the Chinese Community Center, Christus Health, City of Houston Health Department, Community Health Choice, HOPE Clinic, Light and Salt Association, UT Physicians, VN TeamWork, and VNCH.
With the upcoming February 15th deadline to purchase a health insurance plan, Vo, Wu and Nguyen placed special emphasis on the importance of health coverage. “Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation with nearly 6 million Texans who are without health insurance,” Vo said. “By taking advantage of this enrollment period, families can make sure they are covered and avoid penalties.” Nguyen pointed out, “Of the 25 most populated cities, Houston has the second-highest rate of uninsured people. We need to reach our uninsured and underinsured families, and we want them to ‘Have a Healthy New Year.’” “Don’t be left out,” Wu urged. “This community event is a great opportunity for families to learn about their options and find an affordable health plan to fit their needs.”
