The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and the Houston Fire Department (HFD) need your help in spreading the word that beginning in September 2012, there will be free installation of portable visual fire alarms (can be moved or used while traveling) for qualified individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

To qualify for a Free Visual Fire Alarm, one must:

  • Live in the City of Houston or Greater Houston Metropolitan area
  • Have a low or fixed income
  • Require the use of visual fire alarm because of a substantial hearing loss
  • Fill out an application

For assistance in filling out an application, attend an informational meeting on either Thursday, August 23, 2012, 10 a.m.- noon or Monday, August 27, 2012, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center, 1475 West Gray Street, Houston 77019. One does not have to attend either of these sessions to complete an application. These sessions are for help if it is needed.
