Thanking Dr. John Hansen for his service

Dear Key Communicators,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank one of our Trustees, Dr. John P. Hansen, for his service to Alief ISD. As many of you know, Dr. Hansen, who lives in Royal Oaks, will fill the District VI position on the Houston Community College Board of Trustees, beginning in January 2016.

Dr. Hansen has served on the Alief ISD Board of Trustees for 22 years and is currently the President of the Board. I’ve been in education for almost 30 years and believe me, 22 years of service for a trustee is a very long time. In fact, I believe his 22 years of service are a record for an Alief ISD Trustee.   He was elected to the Alief ISD Board of Trustees in November 1993 and is currently serving his third term as President.

During his tenure on the Board, Alief has passed four bond issues which resulted in the construction of 17 new schools and laid the groundwork for recent district improvements like the Career Center and additional Pre-K space at each elementary school.

Alief ISD and the community have experienced significant changes since Dr. Hansen began serving on the Board. Alief ISD’s student enrollment and demographics have significantly grown and changed over the last 22 years.  One thing that has not changed is Dr. Hansen’s high expectations for all staff and students.

Dr. Hansen and fellow Trustees played a significant role in shaping the future for tens of thousands of Alief ISD students during the past 22 years. Just a few of the many contributions that he and fellow Trustees made to Alief ISD include : being strong supporters of establishing a parent engagement program at each campus; creating an academic program for gifted and talented students at the elementary levels; ensuring we are graduating students who are ready for higher education, the military or the workforce; and the preservation of all fine arts programs. Trustees have continued to cultivate a relationship with Houston Community College Systems to provide our students with educational opportunities for higher education exposure while still in high school with the foundation of our Alief Early College High School campus.

Dr. Hansen should also be proud of Alief’s fiscal management resulting in one of the lowest tax rates in the greater Houston area while keeping teacher salaries among the highest in the area.

Although he will no longer be an Alief Board member after the November election, Dr. Hansen will continue to serve as director of the Alief ISD Education Foundation.  This is an example of John’s 22 years of tireless commitment to our students and staff.  Whether you know John or not, or have students in Alief ISD or not, I want you to know that John has represented the Alief community (taxpayers) in a fair, thoughtful and meaningful way. Alief ISD is better because of Dr. John P. Hansen.

Please join me in thanking Dr. John P. Hansen for his service to Alief ISD and wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Sincerely,

HD Chambers
Superintendent
