Visit the Alief Family YMCA on Healthy Kids Day® to get a jump on a healthy summer
Houston – The Alief Family YMCA wants kids to keep moving this summer.
As part of the Y’s commitment to strengthen community by addressing critical gaps in health and education, Healthy Kids Day®, which occurs Saturday, April 26, encourages kids and parents to commit to keeping the body and mind active once school is out. The free event will take place from 10 am to 1 pm at all Houston-area YMCAs.
Research from the Houston Department of Health and Human Services shows that childhood obesity rates are on the rise, with 34.4% of kids in the Houston-area being overweight. These students are heavier than other students in the national population.
“Kids in our community need the opportunity to be active,” said Kevin Kebede – Community Center Executive Director. “Couple that with the fact that children are even more idle in summer months and you begin to understand the importance of developing healthy habits now. Our goal is to improve the overall health and well-being of kids and inspire habits they can continue into adulthood.”
Each YMCA across the greater Houston area is taking part in the celebration. The activities at Alief Family YMCA include :
- Carnival Ride, Moon Walk, Giant Obstacle Course, Face Painting, Arts & Crafts
- Youth Sports Games & Activities
- Line Dance Demo, Youth Dance Demo, and Taekwondo Demo
- Live Band by Project X, DJ, Prayer Station, Health & Educational Activities
