The Kerr High School Tiger Marching Band won second place in the Best Entry Award category for the Alief International Parade. The parade, organized by the Alief Community Association, featured more than 90 Alief ISD groups.
Fifty-five students from Alief ISD’s five high schools were chosen to join the Superintendent’s Academically Talented (SAT) Scholars Program this year. This second group of students, who are juniors, were chosen based on their PSAT scores and will work with coaches to potentially become National Merit Scholars.
About 50 Alief ISD students advanced in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All District Choir Competition. These students, who hail from the district’s high schools, will compete again on October 19 at the regional level.
Special Education Adaptive Physical Education paraprofessional Cathy Schreiber was selected as the outstanding volunteer for Special Olympics Texas’s Area 4 (Greater Houston) for this quarter. Schreiber has been volunteering with the organization for 30 years and is also the head of delegation for the Special Olympics Alief Superstars Team.
Budewig Intermediate Technology Specialist Monique Hawkins was awarded $1,000 from CITGO’s Fueling Good in Education Instagram contest. These funds will go towards purchasing books for the Science Department.
Elsik High School teacher Halehma Naseer recently won The FAB (Females Achieving in Business) Award at the 2013 FEMALES are FABULOUS Conference. The award was presented for Naseer’s continuous philanthropic work with girls in high school through the Ladies of Elegance (LOE) organization.
Budewig Intermediate Orchestra Director Kay Miller was named Co-Chairman of the American String Teachers Association National High School Honor Orchestra. The orchestra will perform at the ASTA Conference in March 2014 in Kentucky.
Athletics Update:
* Middle School Football: Albright is ahead for 8A, while Olle is leading for 8B. Holub and O’Donnell are the top scorers for 7A and 7B respectively.
* Middle School Volleyball: Holub swept first place for 7A, 7B and 8B at the volleyball tournament recently. Albright won first place for 8A.
* High School Volleyball: Elsik’s team has a perfect district record (6-0), with a close win over Hastings. Taylor is second (5-1), and Hastings is tied for third (4-2).
* High School Tennis: The Hastings and Elsik varsity and junior varsity teams are tied for first place in current District 18-5A standings.
