Taylor High School will play Katy High School in a nationally televised game on Thursday, September 5. The varsity football game, which will be broadcast live on ESPNU, will kick off at 7 p.m. at Crump Stadium. Employees and one guest have free admission for all regular season athletic events. Come early, wear red, and be loud!

Congratulations to Ebube Chukwu Nwankwo and Victoria Chavez, Alief ISD’s Scholar Athletes for the month of September. Nwankwo, who attends Hastings High School, is ranked 56 out of 873 students. He is a two-year letterman in football and a one-year letterman in track. Nwankwo is in band and has volunteered for the After School Program Fun Run and the Lunar Festival. Chavez, who attends Taylor High School, is ranked 38 out of 638 students. She is a two-year letterman in volleyball and is active in Student Council and National Honor Society.

After School Program Coordinator Tameka Anderson was published in the August 2013 edition of TechEdge. Her article was titled, “The Importance of PD for Science and Technology Educators.” The publication is released by the Texas Computer Education Association, a nonprofit statewide organization that promotes the use of technology in the classroom.

Holmquist Elementary won $1,000 for classroom resources from CITGO’s Fueling Good contest. The entry was submitted by the campus’s paraprofessional instructional aides.

Elsik High School varsity soccer student Herberth Calderon was recently spotlighted as the Honda Athlete of the Week by KHOU.

Boone Elementary was awarded $2,000 by Target to fund Project FAR – Families Actively Reading. The award will be used to fund a presenter, books and snacks during the campus’s Literacy Night.

Alief ISD graduate Wilson Chang was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program Scholarship to Macau for English Teaching Assistantship. The recognition was awarded by the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Chang is one of more than 1,700 citizens who was awarded the opportunity for this prestigious international educational exchange program. Chang graduated from Hastings in 2006 and also attended Petrosky Elementary and Albright Middle School.

Smith Elementary Librarian Terry Kahn received funding by DonorsChoose.org for a classroom project called, “Promoting Digital Literacy in the Library.” Smith students will be able to begin learning and reading through the use of eight new Amazon Kindles.
