As promised, this newsletter is a comprehensive update on our active public infrastructure projects, ranging from council district service-funded programs to stormwater action to capital improvements to water leaks.

It is a lot of information—with graphics, funding amounts, and project scopes—so you and your neighbors are informed. You will see how exhaustive our investment is in every neighborhood from HWY 6 to Hillcroft. Please take the time to review and share.

I provided an update a few weeks ago, and now I have more information on the long-pending generator scheduled for the Alief Neighborhood Center. We can expect the equipment to be ordered, with a 29-week lead time to installation. Generators are also scheduled for the Westside HPD Command Station on Dairy Ashford and the Braes Water Treatment Plant. The installation of generators is critically important as we continue to experience extreme weather events. I will continue to share updated information as it is received.

Over the past five years, we have installed close to 50 streetlights to improve visibility, mobility, and public safety throughout the district. This is a multi-step process. An application must be completed, locations are assessed by Houston Public Works, and installation is completed by CenterPoint. If your neighborhood or intersection needs improved lighting, please complete the application and return it to our office for processing.

I am very proud of our efforts to improve public spaces, and you should be too.

Several subdivisions have received improvements to their drainage systems through stormwater action projects, which increase drain sizes to allow more water to flow through the system. Currently, Houston Public Works is reviewing Bellaire West and Imperial Point and will notify me of their findings. As two of the older neighborhoods in the district, both have aging drainage systems. I hope to have a response soon.

A few weeks ago, the City Council voted on a contract to clear the backlog of projects from FY24–26. Additional contracts are expected to come before the Council for review and approval. What you can expect to see are construction notices outlining the scope, map, and assigned project manager.

As of August 8, there are 40 active water leaks in 311 and 6 open cases for open ditch maintenance. As a reminder, please report all constituent issues to 311, secure a service request number, and share it with [email protected] so we can follow up after each department completes the necessary protocol.

• This project will enhance public safety, mobility, and overall accessibility for residents to ensure stronger connectivity and a better quality of life.

• We are funding the installation of 100 speed cushions in 33 locations to help calm traffic and enhance public safety for residents and pedestrians throughout the neighborhood.

• The project includes 16 speed‑cushion arrays, totaling 51 cushions, and was divided into two sections due to increased NTMP material costs. With the overall cost approaching a quarter of a million dollars, the work had to be split into phases.
• Section A covers the northern portion of the project area, including the Brookwulf segment adjacent to Alexander Elementary. This phase includes 7 speed‑cushion arrays (24 cushions total) with a project cost of $114,000.00.
• Section B, which encompasses the southern portion of the project area, will be funded in the next fiscal year, costing $128,250, and will complete the remaining portion of the project.

• Ann Arbor St to Stoney Brook Dr (both sides) will receive public safety and accessibility improvements for neighborhood residents.

• Richmond @ Synott and Westheimer @ Fondren (8817 Westheimer) will receive upgrades that enhance public safety and improve pedestrian accessibility for nearby residents.
• These improvements support a safer, more walkable environment for everyone in the area.

Our survey determined that there is sufficient lighting according to current City of Houston standards. The primary purpose of street lighting is to illuminate the roadway. Streetlights are not intended for providing security lighting, pedestrian safety, parking lot lighting, or any other private property lighting. We try to maintain an average spacing of approximately 200’ between streetlights to achieve adequate roadway illumination. If any of the existing streetlights are not working, please contact CenterPoint Energy at (713) 207-2222 or visit their website at https://slo.centerpointenergy.com/ to report streetlight repairs. If the existing streetlights are blocked by vegetation, please contact the City’s “311” Service Helpline to request tree trimming.
