• Alief ISD’s March Scholar Athletes are Aubrey Perez and Diego Pena. Perez represents the Taylor High School softball program, while Pena represents the Elsik High School boys soccer program.
  • Alief ISD high schools swept the competition at the UIL academic district meet. The Hastings team placed first in Accounting, while Taylor’s team took first in Journalism and second in Number Sense. Kerr won second place in Speech and in Computer Science.
  • Mahanay Elementary School raised $1,683.79 for Pennies for Patients to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
  • Hastings High School student Nakai Hill placed first at the Fashion My Future Conference, a state-wide design competition. Hill won a $750 scholarship for the evening dress he designed.
  • Taylor High School student Olive Onyekwelu will be moving onto the National Educators Rising Conference in Phoenix this summer after being named a top five finalist in the Exploring Support Service Careers competition at the state-level conference.  Fourteen Taylor High School students also received the highest honor of blue ribbon during the state conference. These students are a part of the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE).
  • Elsik High School’s REACH students were commissioned by CITGO to create piñata centerpieces for CITGO’s regional meeting in Corpus Christi.
  • Youngblood Intermediate School Principal Gwen Sandles was named Texas National Distinguished Principal finalist by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA). Sandles is one of eight Texas principals selected, and the award recipient will be announced in May at a surprise school visit.
  • Hastings High School Family Specialist Syreeta White-Phillips’ book Pretty Girl with Potential has been nominated for the Coretta Scott King Book Award, which is given by the American Library Association. It is awarded annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.
  • Alief Early College High School teacher Daniel Becker was named a ConocoPhillips Math Teacher of the Month for the 2017 program. The company recognized him and his accomplishments as an exceptional teacher that inspires student interest and excitement in mathematics. In addition to visiting his school in April, Becker will also be recognized in a pre-game ceremony in July at a Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Park.
