Alief Early College High School received the AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction. This is the highest level of AVID implementation fidelity demonstrating excellence in instructional practice and the promotion of college readiness schoolwide. Less than 10 percent of all AVID middle and high schools worldwide are a part of this elite group of schools.

Elsik High School student Dontavious Jackson was selected to play in the 2016 Under Armour All-America High School Football Game. The game is slated for January 2 at the Orlando Citrus Bowl and will be televised live on ESPN2. Jackson is a linebacker for the Rams.

Alief ISD choir students were recognized at the Texas Music Educators Association all-region competition.

  • Elsik High School: William Phi advanced to all-state pre-area auditions.
  • Hastings High School: Fortune Onwunali also advanced to pre-area auditions. Sheila Page, Elvira Vega, Cheyenne Reyes, Christebany Macario, Deamonta Harrell, Dominique Jackson, Christopher Hall and Edwin Sandoval were selected to be members of the region honor choir.
  • Kerr High School: Hoang Nguyen, Khuong Nguyen and Steven Tan advanced to pre-area auditions and also made the region mixed choir. Cecilia Cardenas, Hong Nguyen, Misti Fulmer, Kathryn Negri, Serra Vu, Vera Nweke and Alexandria Parson made the region women’s choir. Charlie Grisson also made the region mixed choir.
  • Taylor High School: Page Campbell and Samantha Jimenez made the region treble choir.

Alief Early College High School students Aneeqa Khan, Menha Akram, Parul Biswas, Kim Dang, Odett Salazar, Shahad Rawdhan, Faiza Qazi, Arianna Harwell, Victor Aguilar and Beverly Moreno have been accepted to the Saturday Morning Science 2 Program through the Baylor College of Medicine.

Martin Elementary Principal Dr. Ting-Ling Sha was recognized by the Organization of Community Advocates. Sha was honored for her outstanding community service in and around the Alief area, including serving as a Chinese Community Center of Houston board member.

Taylor High School teacher Kelvin Kibler and his students were spotlighted by Houston Style Magazine. They were featured for their usage of the materials Chevron sponsored through the Fuel Your School campaign on DonorsChoose.org. The materials are used in Taylor’s Earth and Space Science class.

District business partner Chevron funded the following DonorsChoose.org projects as a part of its Fuel Your School campaign. Congratulations to the following recipients:

  • Martin Elementary teacher Margarita Garza received Hooki stools to encourage movement while learning in the classroom.
  • Mahanay Elementary teacher Jessica Barron received home readers and book bins with a storage cart to instill a love of reading in our students.
  • Cummings Elementary teacher Mark Moore received action-based learning equipment for his classroom to implement physical activity in a meaningful way.
  • Holmquist Elementary teacher Shanaz Ghani received laptops to increase the use of technology in the classroom.
