HCC and HISD expand health career training at Westside High School

Westside-High-SchoolHouston high school students interested in careers in the health arena now have a new training ground at Westside High School. Houston Independent School District, in partnership with Houston Community College and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center School of Health Professions introduced the new program, scheduled to start in August with about 50 to 60 freshmen, which will allow students to earn college credit while in high school and give them hands-on work opportunities. The students will study such areas as cytotechnology, diagnostic imaging, molecular genetic technology and radiation therapy. The Westside program is a continuation of Superintendent Terry Grier’s effort to improve vocational education, giving students training in high-demand careers with the option of entering the workforce directly or going to college after high school. The initial efforts at six other high schools were called the Houston Innovative Learning Zone, but now are dubbed Futures Academy.

Thirteen-year-old student completes calculus class at HCC

John-Coudsi-early-college-programThis summer, John Coudsi went from 7th grade to college level calculus at HCC. Looking for a challenge in math, the 13-year-old attended the Katy Campus through the college’s special admission policy. In addition to HCC’s thriving dual credit and early college programs, HCC allows people who have not yet completed their sophomore year in high school and have exceptional intellectual abilities the opportunity to attend college. John was intrigued by the upper level math course and is more than prepared to enter 8th grade this fall at The Village School, a private institution in Houston’s Energy Corridor. Although John hasn’t decided on a career, he will probably attend college early and has been visiting local schools throughout Texas. When not preparing for his bright future, he enjoys chess, basketball, and playing the piano and saxophone.
