A bilingual musical focuses on Vietnamese Culture at the Miller Outdoor Theatre

The-Tale-of-KieuThis year, 2013, marks the 90th Anniversary Season for the City run Miller Outdoor Theatre, and for the first time, a bilingual musical focusing on Vietnamese Culture will be on the Miller stage this summer, Sat., August 17 and Sun., August 18, 2013.

The innovative bilingual (English & Vietnamese) production selected by the Miller Outdoor Theatre Advisory Board is The Tale of Kieu Musical, which toured Houston and Dallas in 2010 and 2011. The musical was extremely well received by its past audiences. The Author and Artistic Director, Mr. Burton Wolfe and many of the original cast members are honored and excited about the new showcase opportunity and promise that the musical will be filled with even bigger and better musical orchestrations, choreography, martial arts, as well as scenic and audio production values.

The City of Houston’s Miller Outdoor Theatre provides professional caliber cultural performances with tickets that are free to the public. In many ways The Tale of Kieu Musical nonprofit 501(c)3 production company, World Performances Inc., is a match to the Miller Outdoor Theatre mission in that it produces and presents diverse productions to honor global culture, utilizing local as well as international performing artists.

Artistic Director, Burton Wolfe states that “Because the Miller Outdoor Theatre maintains state-of-the-art facilities, including a dedicated administration and skilled technical staff – we are now able to become even more creative with our Tale of Kieu Musical production. The Miller performances will utilize newly designed scenic video imaging and animation. And because the theatre offers free tickets to the public; diverse as well as main-stream audiences (with a potential of 14,000 over the two performances) will be exposed to The Tale of Kieu Musical which is based on the 200 year old and time honored epic poem by Nguyen Du.

Adding new color and energy to the production are martial arts performers from the Shi Xing Hao Shaolin Kung Fu Academy and choreographed dancers from the Oriental Arts Education Center. Mr. Wolfe believes that The Tale of Kieu Musical will not only entertain, but also enlighten audiences about the Houston Vietnamese community and its rich cultural heritage.

The Tale of Kieu 2013 production is sponsored in part by the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board. The Miller grant requires the producing company to raise matching funds for the production, which enables the Free Ticket Policy. A supporting kick-off fundraising event, “Kieu Celebration” is scheduled to take place Friday, August 9, 2013 at Kim Son Restaurant (10603 Bellaire Boulevard). The Tale of Kieu Musical performers will provide entertainment along with a scrumptious dinner, silent auction, dancing and more… In addition, people who attend the event will be given VIP seats to The Tale of Kieu Musical performances. This will save “Kieu Celebration” attendees the need to line up for tickets at the Miller Outdoor Theatre Box Office between 10:30 am to 1:00 pm the day of performance. Also the “Kieu Celebration” attendees will be contributing to a great cause, in that a portion of the evenings proceeds will be donated to BPSOS and its Anti Human Trafficking Initiatives, which relates to the plot of The Tale of Kieu Musical.
