VOLUNTEERS TO PLANT ORCHARD IN ALIEF COMMUNITY GARDEN
WHAT: Orchard Planting at the Alief Community Garden
WHO: Volunteers from the Alief community, Alief Super Neighborhood and International Management District, and representatives from Dreyer’s Fruit Bars
WHEN: Saturday, October 13 at 11:00 a.m.
WHERE: Alief Community Garden, Beechnut at Dairy Ashford
“I think the best part was that it really was a community effort,” said Barbara Quattro, who serves on the International Management District’s Community Development Committee and is also the chair of the Alief Super Neighborhood.
“Trees help all of us. For years to come, people will benefit from the fruit of this orchard and it will bear witness to what we’ve done,” Quattro said. Along with the 500 trees in the Alief tree farm, the Dreyer’s orchard will play a small part in helping to replenish Houston’s green canopy that was devastated in the drought of 2011.
“Anytime you plant a tree is the right time,” she said. “And who knows? Maybe people will see us planting trees and be inspired to plant trees at their own homes.”
About the International Management District: The International Management District was created by the Texas legislature in 2007 at the request of State Representative Hubert Vo. It encompasses approximately 12 square miles of Southwest Houston, a portion of adjacent Harris County and a small portion of Fort Bend County. The District is administered by an 11 member all-volunteer board of directors. Its mission is to enhance the physical, social and economic well-being of the community. The District is empowered to finance projects related to public safety, mobility and transportation, environmental and urban design, and business and economic development.
