The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts is dedicated to ground-breaking, transformative collaborations across the performing, visual, and literary arts. Based at the University of Houston, the Mitchell Center commissions and produces new works, presents public performances and exhibitions, offers curriculum and scholarships, and hosts residencies with renowned visiting artists from throughout the world. The Mitchell Center forms an alliance among five departments at UH: the School of Art, Moores School of Music, School of Theatre and Dance, Creative Writing Program, and Blaffer Art Museum.

Upcoming Events Presented in collaboration with Asia Society Texas Center, On Vanishing, a new site-specific choreographic work by Jonah Bokaer. Originally created for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in response to the exhibition Lee Ufan: Marking Infinity, On Vanishing will be recreated for the Texas Center in response to Relatum — signal, a commissioned sculpture by Lee Ufan. On Vanishing unfolds as an uninterrupted 40-minute work and presents an accumulation of changes in the bodies of five performers of diverse backgrounds. Through movement and gesture, dimensions of space grow and expand over time, while other dimensions shrink. In his first-ever choreographic dialogue with sculpture, Bokaer poses the question, “How does the body erase itself, to prefer matter against presence?” Loren Kiyoshi Dempster contributes music with a rare live performance of John Cage’s One⁸ (1991) for solo cello. This presentation is part of Bokaer’s residency at the Mitchell Center and is sponsored by Houston Arts Alliance. Jonah Bokaer is an internationally acclaimed choreographer and media artist. He is dedicated to expanding live performance through choreography, digital media, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and social enterprise, in the United States and internationally. Recruited for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at the unprecedented age of 18, Bokaer now takes a rare, multi-disciplinary approach to choreography, addressing the human body in relation to contemporary technologies. Scoot-In This unique drive-in film event features artist-made short-length films and videos about two-wheelers (scooters, bicycles, unicycles, tricycles and motorcycles). With Houston’s foundation on oil and energy, the Scoot-In will encourage conversation around alternate modes of transportation. Bart Weiss of the Dallas Video Festival will be the guest curator for this program.
