A traditional, Asian-style pavilion is coming to Precinct 4’s Arthur Storey Park near Chinatown.

Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner R. Jack Cagle will kick off construction with a groundbreaking ceremony featuring food trucks, a lion dance, and face painting.

The ceremony coincides with the Moon Festival, a traditional celebration in Chinese culture, when the moon is at its brightest and fullest. Remarks and the lion dance begin at 10 a.m., followed by the groundbreaking ceremony and festivities at 11 a.m.

The 32-foot by 32-foot pavilion will feature an open-air design, with an ornate, traditional roof designed and built in Taiwan. Precinct 4 will fund the $750,000 pagoda, and STOA Architects will build it.

Construction should conclude on March 31, 2023.

Arthur Storey Park, a popular park near Chinatown, features other Asian-inspired touches, including a yin-yang yoga pad. The pavilion will serve as one more decorative piece reflecting the area’s diverse heritage.
