(Houston, TX) – The International District, Alief ISD and the Alief Super Neighborhood (ASNC) have partnered in continuing the beautification of Alief. Alief ISD has committed to planting trees throughout the Alief ISD school district with trees from the tree farm located at the site of the Alief Community Garden.
This partnership has flourished since the inception of the community garden. The garden is on property owned by the school district and has been funded by the International District with volunteers recruited by the Alief Super Neighborhood. Currently, the garden has a tree farm, a beneficial garden, a citrus orchard, and more than forty beds maintained by community gardeners.
The tree farm has been an asset to the area with over 500 trees available for planting. “We’re open to sharing these trees throughout the community because that was the plan from the beginning,” said Barbara Quattro president of the Alief Super Neighborhood. “It is excellent to see the school district utilizing these trees to beautify our area schools because that’s what it’s all about. The International District works hard with our partners in making our community a cleaner and greener place to live, work and play,” said Wea Lee, chairman of the International District.
“We are pleased to partner with the International District and the Alief Super Neighborhood in this effort to increase the number of trees in and around our campuses and in our community,” said HD Chambers, superintendent of schools.
Alief ISD encompasses 24 elementary schools, 6 intermediate schools, 6 middle schools, 5 high schools, and additional programs designed to meet the needs of our diverse population. Alief ISD recently received the prestigious Voice For Children award from the non-profit organization Children At Risk. Alief ISD was the only public school district in Texas to receive an award from this organization.
The ASNC holds their monthly meeting on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7 pm at the CenterPoint building located at 12330 Bellaire Blvd Houston, TX 77072.
